An Exploratory Study on the Effects of Maternal Education and Factors influencing Anxiety of Postpartum mother


Abstract
This study was aimed to disclose the factors which made influence to the state anxiety of the postpartum mother after discharge from the hospital and the effects of maternal education. The candidates of this study were 100 mothers who delivered normal fullterm babies without any pre or post-delivery complication during the period from Jan. 15, 1982 to April 20, 1982, and each candidate was tested for anxiety twice-once during her staying in the hospital and the other at one week after her discharge.
The results and conclusions were as follows.
1. The state anxiety of postpartum mother after discharge in the experimental group who had been given education were much lower than the control group who had not with statistical significance.
2. The post-discharge state anxiety of primipara was much higher than that of multipara with statistical significance.
3. The state anxietiy of post partum mother did not show any difference between the g??oup of mothers who have occupation and not.
4. Types of deliveries, such as vaginal or c-section, did not make difference to the state anxiety of mother.
5. The sex of bady also did not make any difference to the state anxiety of mother.
6. The types¢¥ of feeding, such as breast feeding, milk feeding, or mixed feeding also did not make any difference to the state anxiety of mother.
7. It made no difference to the state anxiety of mother whether the care taker for the mother was one of her relatives or housemaid.
8. It made no difference to the state anxiety of mother whether they have educational opportunities about child rearing before admission or not.
9. The educational needs of postpartum mother were significantly higher in the group of primiparas than multipara, vaginal deliveries than c-sections, relatives-care taker than house maid and the mothers who have no educational opportunities before admission than who have. On the contrary the sex of bady, type of feeding and have or have not occupation did not make any significant difference to the educational needs of postpartum mother.
10. The control group of mothers who had not been given maternal education experienced much more problems in child rearing than the experimental group who had been.
